The dawning of a new era in Australian sport?

Sun November 27, 2005

I noticed the following two headlines in the paper today:

1) A controversial penalty try against Australia’s backpeddling scrum has sparked a scintillating Welsh upset that may have sounded the death-knell on Eddie Jones’ reign as Wallabies coach. From Wales edge out Wallabies

and

2) New Zealand has broken Australia’s 27-year stranglehold on international rugby league by thumping the Kangaroos 24-0 in the Tri-Nations final. From Kiwis dethrone the Kangaroos

In years gone by Australia have boasted about being good at sport… however of the sports we are good at we are amongst only a small handful of nations that actually play!

Now I know that the Wallabies’ broke their horrible losing streak recently… but they are hardly the form team in World Rugby which has again been highlighted by their loss to Wales! First they were blaming the captain – now they’re blaming the coach. I’m not sure what excuse the Australian Rugby League team have come up with – but considering there are only 3 nations that play it is encouraging that we are still in the top 3.

As the traditional football codes in Australia crumble, we continue to see the rise and rise of real football. Australia has now put itself on the international sporting map by making the finals of the World Cup soccer to be held in Germany next year. This event is the biggest sporting event the world has to offer – bigger than the Olympics and with over 200 nations competing for a spot in the finals. Bring on the World!!

Enough of my ranting – have a read of this to keep things in perspective.
Oh and by the way – Australia is still the number one Nation at Aussie Rules!
