They managed to distill incredibly massive, often complex, truths into lines of such simplicity that, when you sing it, it captures exactly how you feel and leaves you with gut-wrenching emotion! And they did all that in the ballad meter, and even made them rhyme. Wow. Every time I try to write something, my head becomes filled with great lines from hymns already written. <b> Can't we just say no one will ever top "When I Survey The Wondrous Cross" and leave it at that?</b> Having a go at this has really made me appreciate hymn writers!
